CSKA Moscow 0 Manchester United 1

Moscow will always hold happy memories for Manchester United, although it is doubtful that anyone will remember much about this match a year from now.

The merest mention of that heady night in the Russian capital 17 months ago, when United lifted the European Cup after beating Chelsea on penalties, brings a plethora of recollections flooding back, but it was hard to think of an incident of significance at the Luzhniki Stadium last night other than Antonio Valencia’s winning goal four minutes from time.

Not that that will bother Sir Alex Ferguson, the United manager. With the visit to Liverpool in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday looming large over this tie, his team came to do a job and they did it with the minimum of fuss, a thoroughly professional display securing victory against a modest CSKA Moscow side.
